“Your body is not a temple, it’s an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.”
Turns out, the ride ends suddenly, sometimes without warning, and not always at the exit you expected.
Roadrunner is a story we already know — the rise, the ride, and the wreckage left behind. But it’s told with the kind of raw, unvarnished honesty that Anthony Bourdain would have demanded himself. It’s messy. It’s not fair. It’s not tied up with a nice little bow. And that’s exactly why it works.
This documentary takes you behind the kitchen door of Bourdain’s life, but don’t expect a “dine and dash” experience. No, this is the full tasting menu — every bite of fame, love, loneliness, and self-destruction is served up fresh. You’ll feel it all: the high of early success, the late-night whispers of self-doubt, and the bitter aftertaste of isolation. And, of course, there’s Asia Argento — served with a side of media frenzy and a dash of tabloid heat.
Director Morgan Neville doesn’t flinch, which is exactly what Tony would have wanted. The choice to use AI to recreate Bourdain’s voice was a gutsy move — maybe even a bit of culinary blasphemy — but let’s be honest, Bourdain was always down for something bold, even if it pissed people off. It adds a surreal, ghostly layer to the whole thing, like he’s still in the room, cracking wise and sipping whiskey.
If you’re here for a straight hero’s journey, turn back now. Bourdain is no hero. He’s a man who was broken, put himself back together, and then cracked again — only this time, no one could stop the collapse. The film doesn’t shy away from that truth, and that’s where its power lies. No sugarcoating. No “happily ever after.” Just the kind of brutal, clear-eyed honesty Bourdain built his career on.
If you loved him, you’ll hate parts of this. If you hated him, you’ll understand him better. Either way, you’ll walk away hungry for something — a drink, a plane ticket, maybe just one more conversation with the people who matter most.
