Hold my spritzer – Henriette D’Angeville climbs Mont Blanc with 18 Bottles of wine

In 1838, Henriette D’Angeville made history as the first woman to climb Mont Blanc unaided, a badass feat that also included carrying 18 bottles of wine, 26 roast chickens, and a carrier pigeon…that’s good for another two points on the “Hold my Beer” meter. Yet, her story has remained largely untold until now… until adventurer, writer, and presenter Lise Wortley, also known as Woman with Altitude, decided to recreate her journey.

Henriette’s ascent was not only groundbreaking due to her gender but also because of her unconventional attire. At a time when climbing gear for women was non-existent, she fashioned her ensemble, which included knickerbockers, concealed by a corset, and a charming bonnet. Her determination and daring spirit have inspired generations of women, yet her story has often been overlooked in historical narratives.

Lise Wortley’s decision to recreate Henriette’s climb shines a light on the forgotten stories of female adventurers and pioneers. By embarking on this journey, Lise aims to honor Henriette’s legacy and inspire more women to explore the great outdoors. As part of her mission, Lise will be undertaking training walks in six of the UK’s national parks, with support from partners like us who are eager to amplify her message.

Henriette D’Angeville’s triumph on Mont Blanc was not just a physical achievement; it was a symbolic victory that challenged societal norms and paved the way for future generations of female climbers. Her desire to “go higher than any man has before” (she had her crew lift her at the summit, so I guess she’s right), resonates with Lise’s own quest for altitude, as she strives to push boundaries and redefine what is possible for women in outdoor pursuits.

By her feat, we are reminded of the power of storytelling to reclaim lost narratives and celebrate the achievements of women throughout history.

Mr. Jones, take heed.
