What are you running *from*
We’re all guilty of it—thinking that happiness is always just around the corner. We tell ourselves, “I’ll be happy when I land that new job,” or “I’ll be content once I’m living in that dream city.” This mindset, known as “Destination Addiction,” is a sneaky trap that keeps us constantly chasing, but never finding, true contentment.
Robert Holden nailed it with his insight: “Until you give up the idea that happiness is somewhere else, it will never be where you are.” The problem with believing happiness lies in the next place, the next job, or even the next partner, is that it robs us of joy in the present. We get so caught up in the idea of a better future that we forget to appreciate what’s right in front of us.
The irony is that when we do reach those “destinations,” the satisfaction is often fleeting. The thrill of the new job wears off, the excitement of a new relationship fades, and soon we find ourselves looking for the next milestone to bring us happiness. It’s a cycle that never ends.
The solution? Start by cultivating gratitude for what you have right now. Notice the small moments of joy in your daily life—a good cup of coffee, a meaningful conversation, or a quiet morning. Shift your focus from what’s missing to what’s present. Happiness isn’t a place to reach; it’s a state of mind to nurture.
So, before you pack your bags for the next adventure or dream about the next big move, pause and ask yourself: could happiness already be right here? How?
