One Day, Tech Just Melts Away

There’s a future just around the corner—one where we don’t need to hit a screen for every little task. My dyslexic kid and I are already getting a taste of it through voice-first technology, and it’s been transformational. Whether it’s Alexa setting reminders, Siri reading messages aloud, or ChatGPT helping with complex questions, we’re doing more and more by talking to devices, not tapping or typing. And that’s a beautiful thing.

The Shift Toward Voice and Audio Interfaces

For my kid, voice interfaces have been a game-changer. Dyslexia makes interacting with traditional screens a frustrating experience, so talking directly to technology removes that barrier. I’m noticing that I, too, am leaning into voice interaction more. It’s not just about convenience—it’s about freedom from screens. From reminders to reading lists, smart tech is enabling us to engage more naturally, without the constant flickering distraction of a screen demanding our attention.

Brett Taylor and the Next Evolution of User Interfaces

Recently, I listened to Brett Taylor—the tech visionary behind Salesforce and former Twitter board member—talk about where technology is headed. What struck me most was his take on OpenAI’s ChatGPT and the promise of voice interfaces. Taylor believes AI-driven conversational tools are moving us closer to a future where technology becomes seamlessly embedded into our lives, like an Iron Man suit that augments our abilities but never gets in the way. The idea that we could call up tailored information, organize tasks, and even get life advice—all without ever needing to stare at a screen—is no longer science fiction.

Audio & Wearable Technology: Better, But Not Perfect Yet

I’ll admit, glasses-based wearables—even the better ones coming out—haven’t fully won me over yet. Apple’s AR/VR efforts are intriguing but still a bit clunky for daily use. However, we are getting closer. Advances in audio interfaces, from bone conduction headphones to improved voice recognition, hint at a future where wearable tech finally fades into the background. The dream is technology that serves without demanding constant attention.

The Future: Screenless Information Access

The real beauty of this shift is in the simplicity it brings. Imagine not needing to scroll through endless menus or apps to find answers. Your devices just listen, understand, and respond, freeing you to stay present with the people and activities that matter. This is already becoming a reality in our household, and it’s something I see expanding across industries—from healthcare to education and beyond.

We’re on the cusp of a post-screen era, where technology works for us, not the other way around. For me and my kid, it’s not just a novelty—it’s a better way to live. And with tools like ChatGPT leading the way, it feels like we’re slipping into our own custom Iron Man suits—one command at a time.

Tech will be part of our lives, but not in the way.
