Meet Magnus Vance, A Middle East Adventurer in A Line in the Sand

One of the protagonists in A Line in the Sand is Magnus Vance, a portmanteau of many characters I have come upon in my own adventures.

Magnus is driven by a deep-seated curiosity and a passion for exploration, both of which are evident in his adventurous spirit and tech skills. His love for food also adds a unique layer to his character, making him a well-rounded and engaging figure in the narrative. Here are a few examples from the book that support this conclusion:

1. Adventurous Spirit: In the prologue set in Pamplona, Spain, Magnus’s willingness to dive into the unknown is showcased. His participation in the running of the bulls, a dangerous and exhilarating event, highlights his adventurous nature. This is further supported by his decision to embark on a journey tracing T.E. Lawrence’s steps across the Middle East, a testament to his desire for exploration and understanding of historical conflicts.

2. Tech Skills: Throughout their journey, Magnus’s tech skills come into play multiple times. For instance, in Oxford, England, he utilizes his knowledge to decipher clues from historical documents that lead them to their next destination. His ability to navigate modern technology alongside historical puzzles showcases his unique skill set that combines the old with the new.

3. Love for Food: Magnus’s appreciation for the culinary arts is woven into their travels. In Paris, France, his enthusiasm for exploring local cuisine adds depth to his character. The narrative includes a detailed description of Magnus and Finn enjoying a meal that blends traditional French cuisine with Middle Eastern flavors, reflecting Magnus’s open-mindedness and appreciation for diverse cultures.

4. Friendship with Finn: Magnus’s relationship with Finn is central to the story. Their shared passion for history, geopolitics, and the desire to understand the complexities of the Middle East bond them. Their adventure in Europe and the Middle East is not just a journey through physical landscapes but also an exploration of their friendship and mutual respect.

5. And a Quote from the Book: “Ha! Didn’t these people ever play Risk? Impossible to hold on to that dark green Asia/Mid East bit. Seven extra men at the beginning of every go … but you could never keep it! Too much going on!” (Prologue: Pamplona, Spain). This quote reflects Magnus’s humorous yet insightful perspective on the geopolitical complexities of the Middle East, showcasing his adventurous spirit and intellectual curiosity.

Examples like these from the book illustrate Magnus Vance’s multifaceted character, driven by a love for adventure, a knack for technology, a passion for food, and a deep friendship with Finn. Together, they embark on a journey that is as much about understanding the world as it is about understanding themselves.
