Know Your Drop Zone
There’s a reason they brief you before the jump.
Round canopies don’t steer like modern sport chutes. You’re reading the wind, you’re tracking landmarks, you’re thinking three moves ahead before your boots ever leave the aircraft. And when your drop zone is a 976m x 740m Norman cornfield surrounded by trees, a road, and a car park — the plan matters.
Frank Cashman
Operations chief Frank Cashman stopped by while we were geared up. He had the DZ map — aerial satellite, red boundary, wind cross marked in black, red pin at center. He walked through it: wind direction, landmarks, the car park to avoid on the south end, the tree line to tack away from on the east.
It took maybe ten minutes. It was worth everything.
The Jump
When I stepped out of the C-47, I had that map in my head. The car park — stay clear. The trees — tack away. The field — find it, drift into it, flare and land.
I drifted down a bit. Tacked away from the trees. Stayed out of the car park. Landed in the corn.
Plan worked.
What the Map Represents
That aerial photo is a piece of Normandy farmland that has probably looked roughly the same since 1944. The fields stitched together by hedgerows, the farm roads, the villages at the edges. The men who dropped here in the dark on June 5th had no such map. They had a silk panel and a prayer and each other.
We had Frank Cashman and a satellite image and six months of training.
And I was still grateful for every bit of it.
FAQ
What is a round canopy? A traditional military-style parachute — the type used in WWII — as opposed to modern rectangular sport canopies. Round canopies drift with the wind and require different landing techniques.
Who is Frank Cashman? Operations chief for the commemorative jump — responsible for DZ briefings, wind analysis, and coordinating the jump logistics on the ground in Normandy.
What is the D69? A local road running along the southern edge of the drop zone — visible in the map as the yellow line.
What is Miles to Go? Miles Spencer’s blog on entrepreneurship, adventure, history, and the details that keep you alive.
