A Good and Great Man: Mickey Opacic
There’s a thing that happens in life when the weight gets heavy — when logistics pile up, emotions run high, and what you actually need is someone to quietly handle things so you can stay present.
That person, on this trip to Normandy, was my good and great friend Micky.
Nobody asked him to. That’s the part that matters most.
The Logistics of a Once-in-a-Lifetime Trip
Planning a jump over Normandy is one thing. Managing the moving pieces on the ground in France is another. Micky arrived ahead of time, sorted the accommodations, coordinated transportation, and brought a film crew — all without fanfare, all without a request. He handled compass-level detail so that the experience could be what it was supposed to be: meaningful, focused, and unforgettable.
Present at Every Meal, Every Moment
There’s a certain kind of friend who only shows up for the highlight reel. And then there’s Micky — at every meal, in every conversation, fully there. Not performing presence. Actually present.
In situations where the gap between excitement and overwhelm can narrow fast, that steadiness is worth more than any itinerary item.
What Good Men Do
I’ve been thinking a lot about the men who crossed that Channel in June of 1944 — and what made them capable of what they did. Part of it was training. Part of it was mission. But a big part of it was the men beside them. The ones who didn’t wait to be asked. The ones who just did.
Micky reminded me of that in the best possible way.
